The authors reviewed 10 clinical trials involving over 1,000 participants.


All of the studies involved adults between 18 and 65 years old.


Participants were randomly assigned to receive either a capsule containing citrus bioflavonoid or a placebo.


After 12 weeks, the researchers found that the subjects who took the citrus bioflavonoids lost, on average, two pounds more than the control group.


This difference was statistically significant.


For example, the results suggest that the benefits of citrus bioflavonoid supplementation may be greater among overweight individuals than among normal-weight ones.


The researchers also concluded that citrus bioflavonoids might not work equally well for everyone. Some people seem to respond better to them than others do.


A study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology suggests that African mango can help fight breast cancer.


The researchers studied mice that were genetically engineered to develop breast tumors.

In a study, researchers gave mice a compound called LPS (lipopolysaccharides), which mimics the effects of bacterial toxins.


Mice were then divided into three groups. One group was given fucoxanthin, one was given a placebo and the third group received no treatment at all.


After 24 hours, the mice that had been given fucoxanthin showed significantly lower levels of inflammatory markers compared to both the placebo group and the untreated group.


One study from the University of Michigan compared ginger extract to a placebo in overweight adults.


Participants were given either 600mg of ginger root powder or a placebo twice a day for four months.


After four months, the group that was given the ginger extract had lost significantly more weight than the placebo group.


In another study, researchers gave ginger capsules to 16 healthy men and women.


Each capsule contained 300mg of ginger root powder.


After two weeks, participants who took ginger experienced significant decreases in their blood pressure and heart rate.
